Prevention is better than cure, especially when it comes to seepage. Follow these tips to keep your home safe and dry.

There are no short cut solutions to rectifying the problem of seepage says Bengaluru-based Gaurav Roy Choudhury, founder of an architectural firm. Once you identify and fix the problem, let the area dry completely. You can use halogen lamps or fans, or open any windows in the room, to quicken this step. Then proceed to repaint or tile the wall. You can, however, take certain small and easy precautions to prevent seepage from affecting the home.

1

Safety Net

Blocked kitchen pipe are a cause for concern.Even your otherwise efficient maid may toss food scraps into the sink, which do no good. Instead, instruct her against it. Also, buy a fine mesh made of steel, that works like a strainer for your sink, (available at ebay.in). Simply place it over the sink’s hole to catch all that is discarded and throw away the rubbish. Just remember to clean it out regularly.

2

Mop Top

Use a rubber mop to wipe away all those plashes after you’re done with your bath. It will only take you a few minutes, but it will save you time, money, and the headache of having to redo your bathroom, because of seepage. Do the same in other areas that might be a location for stagnant water. It also helps if the concerned area has a gentle slope to help usher the water away.

3

Clean Sweep

Make sure leaves and other debris doesn’t block the mouth of the drain on your terrace or balcony. Many times you, or your gardener, may allow debris to collect around the drain, and while water may still flow through, it may carry with it small twigs and leaves. These will accumulate, and eventually block the pipes. Place small slabs of stone around the drain thus allowing water to flow through, but ensuring that leaves or twigs get caught.
