SYNOPSIS

  • Global warming is a real concern that needs to be addressed right away.
  • Care for your planet by making a few changes at home.
  • You can start by turning your home into an eco-friendly one.

If you are an advocate of environment-friendly ways, you may be more than willing to make meaningful choices to turn your place into an eco-friendly house. If you have been looking for ideas to turn your home into a haven for nature and eco-friendly ways, then this is how you can get started. Here’s a quick list of how you can contribute to the environment, one day at a time:

1. Use old t-shirts as rags

Your parents may not have realised it, but they were maintaining their house as an eco- friendly house when they used your old clothes as rags. All you have to do is follow in their footsteps. Put all your old t-shirts or the unwearable stained ones in a bag and store them so that you can grab one as and when needed. You can use them as dusters, kitchen cloths, or even as hair towels. It is best to use the ones that are made of cotton as they absorb water better.

2. Swap normal bulbs for LED ones

LED lights could be slightly more expensive than your traditional normal bulbs, but they consume lesser power and last much longer. In the long run, LED lights are a more cost and energy-efficient option.

3. Use fewer paper towels

It could be difficult to completely give up using paper towels, but you can definitely reduce their use. Instead, use rags because they can be washed and reused. These rags, could be made from your old cotton clothes. Just imagine the amount of paper you can save by just making this small change.

4. Install recycling and compost bins

Once you install a recycle bin at home, you will be more careful about segregating wet and dry waste at home. As for the compost bins, they will help you turn leftover food waste into fertiliser. If you are worried about stinking up the place, fear not. These compost bins are designed to be free from odour and are hygienic.

5. Plant your own herbs

These plants do not need a lot of space and can be grown in small pots. You can keep them in your house or by the window so that they get sufficient sunlight. The fertiliser you have created in the compost bin can be used for these plants. It is the perfect way to reduce food waste. Besides, you will always have access to fresh homegrown herbs when you need.

6. Fix leaky taps immediately

Water, as you know, is incredibly precious. A lot of water is wasted as a result of leaky taps. If you see one in your house, get it fixed right away.

7. Upgrade your curtains

Keeping the air conditioner on all day seems unavoidable, especially during the summer months. However, there is another option. Invest in curtains that are thick enough to protect you from the heat. Wondering what we are talking about? Well, if you live in an area that does not have many trees, then the sunlight will make your house very hot. Thick drapes will keep excess heat out and keep your home cooler in an eco-friendly way.

8. Invest in a water filter

Plastic water bottles have caused a lot of damage to the planet as they usually end up in landfills. The best thing you can do is to not buy them for your home. Install a water filter in your home to reduce using single-use plastic bottles. Many environment-friendly house owners do this. You would be doing your planet a great favour. Also, make it a habit to carry your own water bottle while stepping out of your home to avoid buying a plastic water bottle when thirsty.

9. Line-dry your clothes

Washing machines have dryers that do not need you to dry clothes on a line like your parents used to. It is very convenient, yes, but this technology uses way too much energy. Some machines have impressive energy ratings, but they are also not that great for the environment. Eco-friendly homes line-dry clothes to reduce carbon emission.

10. Shop vintage

When you think about upgrading the furniture in your home, see if there is any piece in the house that you can repurpose. Also, check out websites that have second-hand furniture instead of opting for brand new ones. By doing this, you will not only add a vintage charm to your home decor but also avoid usable furniture pieces finding their way to the landfills and maintain the status of having an environment-friendly house.
